Nach einem Tag auf der Messe bin ich ein wenig Ratlos.
Mir persönlich haben die Highlights gefehlt. Die Visionen und bahnbrechende Idee. Aber vielleicht erwarte ich einfach zu viel.
Genf ist traditionell die Messe für Luxusfahrzeuge. Dementsprechend gab es jede Menge Edeltuner, den neuen Rolls Royce Phantom Series II und den BMW 6er Gand Coupé. Beides nicht zugänglich. Beim Rolls Royce verständlich, bei BMW war ein Großteil der Fahrzeuge für das Publikum verschlossen. Der 6er sogar nur hinter Absperrungen in im VIP Bereich zu betrachten.
Ebenfalls bei BMW gab es den neuen 3er zu sehen. Dieser war zugänglich und auf den ersten Blick sehr gelungen. Was ich allerdings nicht verstehen konnte:
Wenn man schon diese "tolle" MOdellpolitik mit den Editionen (Sport, Modern, Luxus, M) einführt, warum entsprechen die Ausgestellten Modelle dann nicht diesen Editionen? Ich hatte mich so auf die offenporigen Holzeinlagen der Modern Line gefreut, um festzustellen, das man für den Showwagen Einlagen aus der Luxus Edition verbaut hatte.
Bei Tesla gab es die verbleibenden Roadster und 1 Model S zu bestaunen. Einsteigen nur für Gäste mit Vorbestellung. Der Kofferaum macht einen sehr chaotischen Eindruck, was den nachträglich verbauten Sitzen der 3. Reihe zu schulden ist. Im übrigen Innenraum geht es ausreichend Großzügig zu. Das riesige Touchdisplay in der Mittelkonsole wirk allerdings etwas übertrieben, und ein großteil der Fläche zeigte keine Fahrzeugrelevanten Informationen an, sondern Internetcontent oder Fotoalben.
Mercedes zeigte die neue A-Klasse. Auf den ersten Blick ist die Orientierung an BMWs 1er zu erkennen. Lange Motorhaube und nach hinten verschobener Fahrgastraum. Allerdings wird die A-Klasse über die Vorderachse angetrieben, was auf dem Papier einen besser nutzbaren Koffenraum erwarten lies. Leider werden weder der Stauraum noch die Heckklappe oder die zu eng geschittene Kofferraumöffnung diesen erwartungen gerecht. Im Innenraum geht es moderner zu, als man von Mercedes erwaerten würde, aber vor allem an dem großen Display der Control Systems hört diese modernität bei der Bedienung schnell aus. Auch wenn es von Größe, Position und Anzeigen vermuten lies ist es kein Touchscreen, sondern lässt sich ausschließlich über eine Umständliche Bedienung am Armatuerenbrett steuern. Auch verarbeitungstechnisch bleibt die A-Klasse, wie schon die B-Klasse hinter den Erwartungen in ein Fahrzeug dieser Preisklasse weit zurück.
Ford schickte den neuen B-max ins Rennen. Im Prinzip ein Fiesta-Minivan. von den Dimensionen großzügig genung für eine kleine Familien und mit 2 praktischen Schiebetüren und ohne B-Säule ausgestattet. So wird das "beladen" der 2. Reihe stark vereinfacht. Ausserdem gab es noch einen Ausblick auf den neuen Kuga, der bis auf die Front identisch zum neuen Mazda CX-5 ist.
Volvo stellte den neuen V40 vor, der auf dem aktuellen Ford Focus Hatchback basiert und hier als sportlicher "Kombi" beschrieben wird. Optisch wurde dafür lediglich das Heck etwas kantiger gestaltet und die Front an die üblichen Volvo Formen angepasst. Im Innenraum blieb die freistehende Mittelkonsole aus dem Vorgänger erhalten, die ich im S60 und V60 schmerzlich vermisst hatte. Dafür wurden zusätzlich noch Hybridversionen des V40 und V60 gezeigt, die ebenfalls bald erhältlich sind.
Peugeot stellte den neuen 208 vor. Das Styling ist durchaus ansprechend und modern. Die Verarbeitung machte gegenüber dem Vorgänge einen guten Eindruck. Aber: ich habe noch nie eine so verwirrende Bedienung eines Touchscreen Navigationsgerätes erlebt! Da kann das Interface noch so cool aussehen, die Menüführung ist das Letzte und nicht intuitiv bedienbar.
Bei Citroën gab es den neuen DS5. Der Basiert auf dem Peugeot 4008 und verfügt über einen Elektromotor, der die Hinterräder antreibt. Im Innenraum geht es luxuriös zu, was zu einem Reisemobil durchaus passt.
Volkwagen stellt den neuen kleine UP! den Mii und das gleiche Auto nochmal als Skoda vor. Klein, eckig und stylisch vermarktet. Bei Seat gab es dann noch ein Toledo Concept, mit dem Ausblick auf den nächsten Stufenheck Ibiza.
Audi fuhr gleich mit einer ganzen Flotte von Hybridmodellen vor. Allerdings zu Preisaufschlägen, die mich schon nach dem Sinn dahinter fragen lassen. Wenn ich für das gleiche Geld die Wahl zwischen einem S6 und einem A6 Hybrid mit 2 Liter TFSI Motor habe, überlege ich tatsächlich, ob der S6 nicht doch die wirtschaftlichere Wahl ist. Gleiches gilt für den A8 Hybrid, der nur noch ein viertel des ursprünglichen Kofferraumvolumens hat. Zum Ausgleich gibt es dafür dann ein speziell gestaltetes Kofferset... natürlich separat erhältlich.
Fiat musste da wohl dieses Jahr den Vogel abschießen. Nachdem im letzten Jahr die umgelabelten Dodge und Chrysler als Fiat und Lancia vorstellt wurden gab es in diesem Jahr einen Fiat 500 mit 5 Türen, der verdächtig nach dem Mini Countryman aussah. Nur halt ohne Allrad oder stimmige Proportionen, aber mit farblich abgesetztem Dach in schwarz oder weiß.
Bei Alfa Romeo trat man ohne den eingestellten 159, dafür abermals mit dem Lotus Elise, der hier 4C heißt auf. Insgesamt frage ich mich langsam wirklich, was hier die übergeordnete Strategie des Konzerns ist, denn nur mit den Imageträgern Ferrari und Maserati kann man sich sicherlich nicht halten.
Opel zeigte den Mini-SUV Mokka. Eine Mischung aus Corsa und Susuki SX4. Ausserdem konnte ich mir endlich mal den Ampera aus der Nähe anschauen. Was ich schnell bereuen sollte. Das Auto unterscheidet sich tatsächlich nur in der Farbe der Mittelkonsole (Chevrolet weiß, Opel grau) und der Front vom Volt. Inklusive allem, was das Design und Bedientkonzept des Volt nicht gut gelöst hatte. Die verlegten Teppiche sind eher peinlich und fasern nach etwas über 1 Woche Messebetrieb bereits aus. Der Teppichfetzen, mit dem die Lücke zwischen den Rücksitzen per Klettverschuss geschlossen werden kann raisst die bespannung der beiden Sitzrückseiten auf und auch sonst sind die Verschleissspuren vielfältig und gut sichtbar.
Überraschend waren die neuen Cee'd von Kia. Gegenüber dem aktuellen Modell machen diese in Design und Verarbeitung einen sehr großen Sprung nach vorne und wildern von nun an wohl eher im Revier von Golf und Astra, als bei Ford, Skoda und Seat. Wenn die Fahrbarkeit auf gleichem Niveau zugelegt hat wird es mit Sicherheit eng für die bisher Etablierten Hersteller werden. Vom baugleichem neuen i30 bei Hyundai erwarte ich ähnliches. Hyundai stellte ebenfalls noch den i40 als Limousine vor, der bis auf den Laderaum dem Kombi entspricht.
Bei Renault gab es vor allem die neuen Elektroautos Z.E. zu sehen. Leider war der neue ZOE ausschlieslich gelandenen Gästen vorbehalten. Den Fluence konnte ich allerdings testen. Die erste Überraschung war: Gestartet wird mit einem konventionellem Schlüssel. Sonst fährt er sich wie ein normales Auto, nur leiser und nicht ganz so weit. Nach spätestens 180 Kilometern ist schluss. Im Winter kann das auch schon nach 80 Kilometern sein.
Sometime you will find the strangest things, where you would have never expected them.
My trusty Outlook client, that connect as much as all my email accounts, calendars, contacts and to-do lists, has this neat little feature called "Social Connector". This enables me to connect to my LinkedIn, Xing or even Facebook contacts by the click of a button within Outlook.
This work quite well. Contacts, I've imported through my social connector where updated automatically, when something had changed.
Then came alot the iOS 5 release with it's nifty little iCloud service. Which sounded great at first. All my email, contacts, calendars, notes could now be synced between Apple devices.
Only that, appart from 2 iPhones and an iPad I didn't own any Apple devices, and my PIM was Outlook.
Fortunately Apple also provides a downloadable iCloud Manager for Windows.
After installing it, I regret it imediatly. All my contacts from outlook had been erazed and replaced by the ones already on my iOS devices. The same for my notes and my tasks. Only, I had not synced any notes and tasks with Outlook before.
So they were all gone.
The second thing I noticed was, that my social connectors didn't seem to work any more. The importet contact list of my social network providers didn't update and new would contacts never show up in the list.
At the end of the last year I moved some of my mail accounts to Microsoft's Office 365, since I was really fed up with the service at GoDaddy, that was unable to get my mailboxes to work at all. To make this deal fit all our requirements I also included parts of my family in this account and gave them each a mailbox.
For some reason, I was the only one, that could not connect the Outlook client with the Exchange servers. No matter what I tried, it would not authenticate to the server, constantly asking me for credentials.
The solution partly came from a newsgrop response, to clear all files from
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\
What this does is delete all user config files for Outlook. It will not delete any mail account settings.
Open Control Panel > Email
Delete the Exchange Account, if present
Add a new Exchange Account
Start Outlook
which didn't work the first time I've tried.
After some thinking I uninstalled the iCloud Manager and tried again. Bingo!
Just to verify this, I reinstalled iCloud and everything was broken again.
For now, I'm removing iCloud Manager from all my devices and hope, that Apple will learn to write proper and working software in the future, that will not cripple everything else on my computer.

Also der Zeitpunkt an dem der Weg bis zur Rente kurzer ist als das bisherige Leben.
geplant hatte ich eine ordentlich grosse Party... leider musste ich jetzt meinen Urlaub auf August verschieben, und somit auch den Plan überdenken.
Die Party wird nachgeholt, aber ich werde wohl die Art umplanen. Wann und wo teile ich dann noch mit.
Nächste Woche werde ich mich wohl übers Wochenende in Mainz rumtreiben, bevor ich wieder zurück nach Zürich fahren muss. Ursprünglich wollte ich von dort aus ein paar Freunde besuchen und besagt Party vorbereiten.
So wie es aktuell aussieht, werde ich dafür 2 Wochen im August nutzen können. Wenn ihr also kreative Vorschläge habt, wie und wo ich meine "Diesen-Sommer-Nicht-Geburtstagsparty" stattfinden lassen kann darf gerne eine Mail, Kommentar oder sonstiges hinterlassen.
Der beste Vorschlag gewinnt und bekommt von mir ein Geburtstagsgeschenk. Belohnung muss halt auch mal sein.

This weeks puzzle to be solved: How big can our hosted virtual machines get without blocking too many resources and what can we do in case they still need to grow?
Historically VMs where created to consolidate all these tiny little server loads lurking in our data centers. each one on its own hardware that was essentially never utilized at all. Today these VMs get bigger and bigger every year as hypervisors can allocate more and more resources to each virtual machine. But there is a limit after all.
The Host server can only handly so much load. At a certain point of growth it simply doesn't make sense to host a super large VM, since there will be only enough resources for 2 or three of them. We could now revert to a physical installation, but this would also rob us of some ofthe benefits we had with the virtual machines. Like: moving the server from host to host for maintenance, business continuity in case a host server fails, easy backups through storage snapshots of the image file, etc.
And after all... we would still have the same SLA with out clients, so we all would likely have to install a physical failover cluster to keep up out agreements. No, I don't want to go there anymore!
Why don't we just boot the hardware directly from the virtual disk? Windows 7 and Server 2008 have this feature build in, for most of the other OS' there are tools that help you.
Only one catch: Native support in Windows seems only to support the VHD format while VMWare provides me with a VMDK. There are some tools that enable you to boot any kind of image, but I really need to figure out how to do this in an highly automated production environment.

Ok, short story: I moved to Switzerland in January and I have an iPhone or two. So I did buy a lot of music and apps throught the crappy shit, Apple calls an Application a.k.a iTunes.
Having a new address, bank account and of course credit card, I changed all the details on my iTunes account to save me the trouble of managing two accounts. One for Germany and one for Switzerland. All the apps are available in both countries, actually.
In the last weeks I noticed the number of updates on the notification bubble within iTunes keeps rising, while the update page doesn't show any updates at all. When accessing the AppStore from the phone it still shows alle available updates.
So I did the only thing I could do and asked Apple for support.
Strange behavior with App Updates
The App page in iTunes shows a number of available updates for my purchased apps (currently 11). When clicking on the show available updates button it says no updates available.
When accessing the AppStore through my iPhone or iPad I get a list of all the updates to install.What are the details, including any error messages, related to your question?

Is it possible that you have downloaded the apps with a different account ? Because if yes , you need to sign in with this account you have downloaded the apps to get updates for the other apps. You can check it with presses cmd+i (ctrl+i).
So, it tried to explain the problem again

Actually I changed my account from Germany to Switzerland when I moved here to avoid having a second account for no reason.
But for some reason it didn't work
Now you need to look with which account you downloaded the apps. With this account you can just make the updates. In my previous mail i explained you the steps. Please take a look again.

It's The Same Account! I just changed The Country and Home Address of it.

After changing the country, some apps can't be updated any longer and need to be purchases again. The contents of the App Store is country specific. If you want to upgrade programs, please do so before the change of the country. If you have changed the country of your account, you can use programs that you have purchased with the previous country setting, no longer update. I'm very sorry for that information.

Well, unlike most parts of the US, Europe does have borders to other countries... lots of them. Travelling between countries is practically an everyday event. Moving to another country is concidered as a "normal" process.
Ok, so I didn't move within the European Union, but to Switzerland. Still I just had to register at the local city bureau and fill some forms.
But back to the lab.. or the scrapyard, that resembles iTunes.
I have an account. I buy music and software licenses with this account. Reason would tell me the licenses are linked to this account. If I now take this account and move it to another country, the licenses should not be affected by this, since they are linked to the account.
Taken the answer I got from Apple support: I moved the account to Switzerland, losing the link to all applications I bought in Germany over the years. But, since I can still access them via phone it implicates, that this process created a second account with the same credentials in Switzerland.
Which is... to say lightly: "Bullshit by design"
First of all: I already bought the license, wether or not the software/music is available in Switzerland! From my point of view, not giving me access to updates or the ability to recover lost files by downloading them again comes very close to thievery.
And for the "purchase again" part: ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MIND?
